Why Learn To Learn Works

Multiple IntelligencesUnlike other learning programs, Learn To Learn combines groundbreaking research in neuroscience and psychology to focus on the fundamental building blocks of learning – at the brain level – the core brain abilities and integration that prepare us to learn.

The program is based on the fundamental concepts of “Multiple Intelligences” which teaches that there are many types of intelligence that can be grouped into workable categories of general abilities:

Learn To Learn is not about information or “content.”  It’s about “wiring up” the brain for peak performance.  It’s about strengthening the fundamental abilities that help us learn information “content” easier, faster, retain it longer and understand how to strategically use that information to solve problems in the real world.

  1. We assess the development level of critical brain abilities…
  2. Identify the brain’s individual learning preferences
  3. Identify weaknesses in need of focused attention… as well as strengths that can be enhanced into extraordinary talents…
  4. With a brain development exercise program customized to your specific level of development in each core brain ability.

Learn To Learn targets the specific area of the brain in need of development… stimulates that brain area with repetitive exercises… and continually increases the challenge level of the exercises – this is how the brain learns.

The building blocks

CognitionCognition

Your ability to understand, comprehend, discover, rediscover, process information, as well as follow routines, directions and instructions.

Cognition is considered a fundamental learning ability because you must understand a task before you can use your higher order thinking skills such as problem solving and evaluation.

How many times have you been confused starting a task… when you finally "get it” as to what you're being asked to do – those “Aha!” moments that we all experience?

Are you capable of handling fast-paced, changing tasks and enjoy the challenges of fast-paced, demanding activities… or do you do best with brief, well-defined instructions that are presented one step at a time and on tasks that are well defined, structured and repetitive?

Memory

Your ability to remember, classify and hold information in “mental storage” so that such information may be easily recalled or recognized.  It includes both short-term and long-term memory.

It covers the full range of material – from memory of incidental facts to memory of how systems function and how things are related.  It applies to both auditory and visual inputs.

Memory is fundamental to almost all of the higher level learning functions.  It is obvious that we cannot process information and facts that we cannot recall.  It is equally as clear that memory is a foundational ability for spelling, reading, reading comprehension, and mathematics (both basic and advanced).

Evaluation and Classification

We can’t possibly retain and store everything – we must evaluate what is important and store it away in mental “file cabinets” ready to access when needed.

Learn To Learn measures your abilities to judge, make good decisions, predict what will happen, plan effectively, compare alternatives and process information in a sensible and responsible manner.

These skills are often associated with maturity, leadership and sound judgment.

Are you comfortable making decisions, plan effectively, and are you capable of performing in a mature and sensible manner…

or do you avoid leadership positions and have difficulty with tasks that require you to make quick judgments and engage in the planning of complex activities?

Problem Solving

Learn To Learn measures your ability to arrive at correct answers and solutions when the solutions require more than just the classifying, retrieval and comparing of information.  It is a higher order learning activity that depends on the other lower level activities, but carries the processing of the information to a higher level.

If your Problem Solving is well developed, you can arrive at solutions to problems that require the following of rules and analyzing information. You can successfully process academic material such as math, language skills and reading comprehension.

Coupled with proper motivation, this ability should allow you to be both productive and successful in school subjects, business and life that involve the solving of problems.

If your Problem Solving is underdeveloped, you will find it difficult to arrive at understandable solutions to problems and become frustrated by these difficulties.  You will be most uncomfortable in situations that require you to apply existing rules to new problems and circumstances.

These difficulties negatively affect your study and work habits and diminish your levels of productivity and success in the subjects that involve the solving of problems.

Everyone is different…

During our life some or most of these cognitive abilities develop normally which allows us to apply these abilities when needed in the learning situation.  Rarely, if ever, does anyone fully develop all of their cognitive abilities.  Each of us has cognitive abilities that remain underdeveloped, and this results in our having difficulty learning the material that requires the use of these core abilities.

It is possible to develop these underdeveloped cognitive abilities throughout out lives but we must first determine which remain underdeveloped before we can attempt to develop them.

Only Learn To Learn identifies what is underdeveloped and FIXES the specific problem(s) it uncovers.
